Avian Flu is the latest in a series of emerging infections which seem to be "flying" toward us with increasing regularity. On the heels of HIV, SARS, and West Nile fever, "bird" flu threatens outbreaks of pandemic proportion, depending on whether the virus becomes more adept at spreading from person-to-person. So far, the most serious species, H5N1 has had limited spread in this mode, and has not continued beyond one person. Where it has struck, however, it has caused fatalities in more than half of those infected. Original images courtesy of Cynthia Goldsmith, Jacqueline Katz and Sherif R. Biohazards are organisms or organic substances that threaten human or animal health, including medical waste as well as microbial toxins capable of causing both disease and mortality. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) categorizes various diseases in levels of biohazard, Level 1 (e.g. E. coli) being minimum risk, Level 4 (Ebola) being extreme risk. The universal symbol is a precautionary warning – so if you see it on something, you can be sure it is not a good thing!

Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming bacillus currently increasing in prevalence and virulence, especially in hospital settings. It is capable of causing intestinal conditions ranging from mild diarrhea to fulminant, potentially fatal colitis. Testing is labor intensive and often inconclusive, and treatment can be problematic. Exposure to antibiotics can lead to what is known as CDAD (C. difficile - associated disease) – another instance of a cure causing as much harm as the disease! C. difficile is often transferred to patients via contaminated hands of health care personnel and remains a significant nosocomial issue. Poliovirus causes poliomyelitis, a CNS disease of once-epidemic proportions. A 1988 WHO resolution to eradicate polio originally targeted for completion in 2000- has resulted in elimination of the dread disease in 98-99% of the world. However, a difficult mopping up effort remains in order to achieve the goal of a polio-free global community. Presenting the Eradication Edition of our poliovirus (necktie, scarf) design, featuring incorporation of the famous Rotary International wheel logo. Rotary International and its PolioPlus foundation are at the forefront of the global campaign to eradicate polio once and for all! In conjunction with the World Health Organization and other agencies, Rotary International has helped eliminate this dread CNS disease in 98 - 99% of the world. A difficult challenge remains, however, to stamp out that last 1%, which if not addressed, could lead to reemergence.

IA strongly supports this campaign and will donate a portion of every sale to the PolioPlus foundation to help in its continuing efforts.

Rhinovirus (Common Cold) is one of over 100 distinct RNA viruses that most often cause the common cold. Infection is transmitted by direct contact, aerosol inhalation, or indirectly by contaminated objects (fomites). Symptoms include dry scratchy throat, headache, nasal congestion, sneezing, and malaise.
SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) appears to be caused by a virulent emergent coronavirus originated by animals and migrated to humans. The epidemic of 2003 was remarkable for its rapid spread , high mortality rate, the speed of genomic ID, and the unprededated global cooperation towards containment.

The MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) design draws attention to the increasingly serious issue of antibiotic resistance. Typically transmitted skin-to-skin, MRSA in its earliest form was primarily a “hospital-acquired” pathogen. However, it has now mutated into a “community-acquired” strain, characterized by excretion of a potent toxin which attacks the immune system and destroys tissues. It is important to note that resistant forms look the same as other bacteria except that they bear genes and products – as demonstrated in our design by the “glow” around the mutant strains - which protect them from antibiotics. Inspiration for this design was provided by APUA (Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics), an international organization dedicated to encouraging responsible use of antimicrobials and curbing antimicrobial resistance world wide.
Staph aureus infections can be as minor as a pimple, or as serious as a fulminating infection. A common bacteria typically residing on the skin, Staph can be lethal if introduced into the blood stream. Staph is one of the major contributors to nosocomial, or hospital-induced infections. To make matters worse, Staphyloccoccus is becoming increasingly dangerous as it builds resistance to anti-microbial therapy (antibiotics.)

Based on the Treponema pallidum pathogen, this necktie design is a work of art. Syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a spirochete, was at one time as feared as AIDS. Today, while we have the potential to eradicate this disease, we still see outbreaks which remind us of this serious threat. Syphilis can cause serious heart abnormalities, mental disorders, neurologic problems, blindness and death. It is characterized by distinct stages, usually over a period of years.

Based on the Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogen, this necktie pattern is faithful to the slide, right down to the “red snappers.” TB, an age-old bacterial pathogen transmitted by airborne droplets, remains the greatest infectious killer in the history of man. It has re-emerged to pose a serious global threat, causing more than 2 million deaths each year, primarily in developing countries. Its multi-drug resistant (MDRTB) form is particularly dangerous and growing more wide-spread where crowded conditions and non-compliance to strict drug regimens are common.

Vaccinia virus, a less dangerous relative of variola, forms the basis for the smallpox vaccine which was used to accomplish one of history’s great public health achievements, global elimination of smallpox. Our design is dedicated to the courageous U.S. led WHO team instrumental in this effort. It features the two most typical appearances of the virus, brick and horseshoe shaped, and is highlighted by images of the bifurcated needle used in the vaccination process. VACCINATION is the introduction of an antigen (VACCINE) in order to produce immunity to a disease. Today, such public health menaces as measles, mumps, hepatitis A/B, chickenpox, pneumonia, meningitis, polio and influenza are all controllable – some, e.g. polio and measles, actually within reach of eradication. This design illustrates antigens triggering protective antibody production. A vaccination needle is discretely positioned at the lower border of the design.

Legionella, Norovirus, Pseudomonas, Hepatitis A, Cryptosporidium and E. coli
Legionella: arguably the most common viral cause of foodborne illness, gets most headlines when lurking in hotels and cruise ships.
Noroviruses: are a group of related, single-stranded RNA, nonenveloped viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a rod-shaped organism that can be found in soil, water, plants, and animals. Because it rarely causes disease in healthy persons, but infects those who are already sick or who have weakened immune systems, it is called an opportunistic pathogen.
Hepatitis A: is an acute infectious disease of the liver caused by Hepatitis A virus, which is most commonly transmitted by the fecal-oral route via contaminated food or drinking water. Following infection, the immune system makes antibodies against the hepatitis A virus that confer immunity against future infection.
Cryptosporidium: Cryptosporidium is a protozoan pathogen which does not utilize an insect vector and is capable of completing its life cycle within a single host, resulting in cyst stages which are excreted in faeces and are capable of transmission to a new host.
E. coli: E. coli are not always confined to the intestine, and their ability to survive for brief periods outside the body makes them an ideal indicator organism to test environmental samples for fecal contamination.

Healthy sleep is a complex blend of electrical rhythms and hormones, including: REM (rapid eye movement) for the dream state; Slow Wave for depth and tranquility; and Melatonin, a master regulatory hormone. Deficits in any of these elements can lead to debilitating sleep debt or disorder, conditions that are silently growing into a health crisis. “ZZZ’s and Dreams” is an accurate reproduction of molecular Melatonin, and actual REM and Slow Wave EEGs.

It would be fun to dress a team with a shirt for your specialty and challenge another practice to a softball or basketball etc. game for bragging rights or to fund a local charity or medical research fund. If you can pull off such an event I will offer a reduced price on the team colors. Instead of shirts and skins consider bones vs guts!
All ties are new and purchased from the manufacturer except for ties with "Collector" in the title.
Only these "Collector" ties have been purchased on the secondary market with unknown provenance. They may be manufacturer overstocks, retail closeouts, seconds or gently used by a previous owner. Many of my customers collect ties in specific themes and I help them find treasures. Some ties were given as gifts to the wrong person and get passed on without even being worn. Other ties might have been chosen for a specific occasion and rarely worn again.
Consider these ties for a nice price on a beautiful tie that is no longer being printed. All ties are without flaws and current or collector may be returned or exchanged if you are not pleased.
