Patterned after the micrograph of the spore-forming Bacillus anthracis bacteria, and laced between biohazard warnings. Anthrax is a highly lethal disease capable of causing shock and death in 24 – 36 hours. An effective vaccine has limited the danger to its primary target, farm animals. However, due to its airborne mode of transmission, it looms as a significant biological warfare threat. |

Biohazards are organisms or organic substances that threaten human or animal health, including medical waste as well as microbial toxins capable of causing both disease and mortality. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) categorizes various diseases in levels of biohazard, Level 1 (e.g. E. coli) being minimum risk, Level 4 (Ebola) being extreme risk. The universal symbol is a precautionary warning – so if you see it on something, you can be sure it is not a good thing! |

Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming bacillus currently increasing in prevalence and virulence, especially in hospital settings. It is capable of causing intestinal conditions ranging from mild diarrhea to fulminant, potentially fatal colitis. Testing is labor intensive and often inconclusive, and treatment can be problematic. Exposure to antibiotics can lead to what is known as CDAD (C. difficile - associated disease) – another instance of a cure causing as much harm as the disease! C. difficile is often transferred to patients via contaminated hands of health care personnel and remains a significant nosocomial issue. Avian Flu is the latest in a series of emerging infections which seem to be "flying" toward us with increasing regularity. On the heels of HIV, SARS, and West Nile fever, "bird" flu threatens outbreaks of pandemic proportion, depending on whether the virus becomes more adept at spreading from person-to-person. So far, the most serious species, H5N1 has had limited spread in this mode, and has not continued beyond one person. Where it has struck, however, it has caused fatalities in more than half of those infected. Original images courtesy of Cynthia Goldsmith, Jacqueline Katz and Sherif R. The Ebola virus is a vicious, “level 4” pathogen that can cause severe hemorrhaging and extremely high mortality. To date, human infection has been limited to bloodborne or fluid modes of transmission. Some strains, however, can be airborne, as in the outbreak at Ft. Detrick, Maryland in 1989. Fortunately, these strains thus far have been confined to animals. The natural host remains unknown. |

Campylobacter: considered the most common bacterial cause of foodborne illness. Primarily from poultry, estimated to cause over 2 million U.S. infections annually. Salmonella: estimated to cause 600 deaths annually, acquired mainly from beef, poultry, pork and eggs. Listeria: not as well-known as Sal and E., but usually more deadly, with infections leading to blood poisoning or meningitis. Mainly a problem with ready-to-eat foods Shigella: one of the most frequent causes of GI disease in people, nearly 500,000 cases annually in the U.S. Typically originates from food or water contaminated with human or animal waste. Passes easily between people – nursi Norwalk virus: arguably the most common viral cause of foodborne illness, gets most headlines when lurking in hotels and cruise ships. E. coli: a common, usually harmless intestinal bacteria, until it morphs into 0157:H7 producing a powerful and potentially lethal toxin. Most infections come from contaminated meat, especially beef, in the form of undercooked ground beef. The bacteria are often spread among the great “unwashed,” i.e. from poor handwashing or hygiene habits.

Poliovirus causes poliomyelitis, a CNS disease of once-epidemic proportions. A 1988 WHO resolution to eradicate polio originally targeted for completion in 2000- has resulted in elimination of the dread disease in 98-99% of the world. However, a difficult mopping up effort remains in order to achieve the goal of a polio-free global community. Presenting the Eradication Edition of our poliovirus (necktie, scarf) design, featuring incorporation of the famous Rotary International wheel logo. Rotary International and its PolioPlus foundation are at the forefront of the global campaign to eradicate polio once and for all! In conjunction with the World Health Organization and other agencies, Rotary International has helped eliminate this dread CNS disease in 98 - 99% of the world. A difficult challenge remains, however, to stamp out that last 1%, which if not addressed, could lead to reemergence. IA strongly supports this campaign and will donate a portion of every sale to the PolioPlus foundation to help in its continuing efforts.

The MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) design draws attention to the increasingly serious issue of antibiotic resistance. Typically transmitted skin-to-skin, MRSA in its earliest form was primarily a “hospital-acquired” pathogen. However, it has now mutated into a “community-acquired” strain, characterized by excretion of a potent toxin which attacks the immune system and destroys tissues. It is important to note that resistant forms look the same as other bacteria except that they bear genes and products – as demonstrated in our design by the “glow” around the mutant strains - which protect them from antibiotics. Inspiration for this design was provided by APUA (Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics), an international organization dedicated to encouraging responsible use of antimicrobials and curbing antimicrobial resistance world wide. Staph aureus infections can be as minor as a pimple, or as serious as a fulminating infection. A common bacteria typically residing on the skin, Staph can be lethal if introduced into the blood stream. Staph is one of the major contributors to nosocomial, or hospital-induced infections. To make matters worse, Staphyloccoccus is becoming increasingly dangerous as it builds resistance to anti-microbial therapy (antibiotics.) |

Bacteria Necktie Legionella, Norovirus, Pseudomonas, Hepatitis A, Cryptosporidium and E. coli |
Legionella: arguably the most common viral cause of foodborne illness, gets most headlines when lurking in hotels and cruise ships. Noroviruses: are a group of related, single-stranded RNA, nonenveloped viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a rod-shaped organism that can be found in soil, water, plants, and animals. Because it rarely causes disease in healthy persons, but infects those who are already sick or who have weakened immune systems, it is called an opportunistic pathogen. Hepatitis A: is an acute infectious disease of the liver caused by Hepatitis A virus, which is most commonly transmitted by the fecal-oral route via contaminated food or drinking water. Following infection, the immune system makes antibodies against the hepatitis A virus that confer immunity against future infection. Cryptosporidium: Cryptosporidium is a protozoan pathogen which does not utilize an insect vector and is capable of completing its life cycle within a single host, resulting in cyst stages which are excreted in faeces and are capable of transmission to a new host. E. coli: E. coli are not always confined to the intestine, and their ability to survive for brief periods outside the body makes them an ideal indicator organism to test environmental samples for fecal contamination.
