FLW was a very incisive, engaging speaker and an inspiring mentor. He was equally adept at expressing himself with the written word as he was with his architectural designs. House Beautiful magazine featured one of his letters in a 1959 issue. A 14 year old boy named Phillip had written FLW asking for the definition of an "architect". Wright's written reply to Phillip was the letter reproduced identically in the magazine and represented on this t-shirt.

The Edgar J Kaufman SR. Residence is FLW's most recognized and most innovative residential design. Fallingwater is an excellent example of his strong affinity to organic design. Wright's organic design is inspired by natural forms, drawing in it's variety and creativity from nature itself. Fallingwater's cantilevered terraces soar dramatically over a natural waterfall. The interior of the house, thru wild bands of windows, blends seamlessly into the surrounding woods, creating a harmony of place, person and materials. Now a museum, it has been visited by more than four million people (me included).

The Imperial Hotel, constructed 1913-1922 in Tokyo, Japan, was one of FLW's largest and most extravagant projects. A long time admirer of Japanese art and architecture, Wright personally designed nearly every detail of the opulent hotel including rugs, furniture, lighting and peacock murals. The peacock motif appeared throughout the hotel. This design is an adaptation of a detail from the Imperial Hotel banquet hall peacock motif. In 1923, This unique, modular and modern structure survived Japan's worst recorded earthquake, while many surrounding buildings were destroyed. This added to the hotel's fame and greatly enhanced Wright's reputation as an architect. Although the Imperial Hotel was the premier luxury hotel in Tokyo for decades, it was finally demolished in 1968. The main entrance and lobby of the hotel were preserved and reconstructed at the Museum Meiji-Mura, an architectural park near Nagoya, Japan.

Wright was nearly 70 when he accepted the assignment which was to be his first corporate headquarters in 30 years. After Wright dramatically defended his unconventional tree-like column design to to the city of Racine, Wisconsin, the building received public accolades. FLW is best known for being a brilliant architect though he was also an inspiring educator and a charismatic speaker. Mr Wright's Organic Commandments are simple yet graphically powerful and profound. First issued as a limited print run by Wright's Taliesin Press in 1934, the principles expressed here assumed a broader application as a life philosophy and continue to have a significant impact on the fields of architecture and design. The source of the artwork adapted for this t-shirt is a Christmas card designed by Me Wright for the Taliesin Fellowship and their friends.

FLW, widely regarded as the most influential architect of his time, was a master of rendering images with colored pencils. He once said, "Colors - in pastel or crayon - always a thrill! To this day I love to hold qa handful of many colored pencils and open my hand to see them lying loose upon my palm in the light." The pencils in this image, now in FLW Archives, were on Wright's desk at the time of his death.

Solomon R Guggenheim Museum T-shirt Frank Lloyd Wright Collection W16 front design t-shirt black L, M, S $30.00
In a response to a critique of the Guggenheim, FLW said that it was his intention "to make the building and the painting an uninterrupted symphony such as never Existed in the World of Art before". To achieve this, he chose a site near the peace and tranquility of Central Park, and after many trials he chose an organic form that admits natural diffused light from above and at every level. He said further that the building "is one great space in a continuous floor. The eye encounters no abrupt change but is gently led as if at the edge of the shore watching an unbreaking wave."
Sumac Windows T-shirt Frank Lloyd Wright Collection W07 front design t-shirt dark chocolate 11" x 4" XL, L, M $30.00 XX $34.00
The Dana House in Springfield, IL is a tour de force of FLW's "Prairie" style. Taliesin T-shirt Frank Lloyd Wright Collection W23 front design t-shirt navy XL, L, M, S $30.00
Sited on a hill in the Wisconsin Valley settled by Mr Wright's mother's family., Taliesin is named after a 6th century Welsh poet whose name translates as "shining" or "radiant" brow. Begun in 1911, Taliesin is the realization of many of Mr. Wright's ideas pertaining to organic architecture. The building was rebuilt following a fire in 1914, and again after another fire in 1925. The Taliesin Fellowship, an association of architects, architecture students and designers was begun here in 1932. Some of Mr. Wright's most famous buildings had design origins at Taliesin, among them Fallingwater and the administration building of S.C. Johnson.
Tree of Life T-shirt Frank Lloyd Wright Collection W30 back design with small heart print t-shirt natural 7.25" x 12.5" L, M, S $30.00 XX $34.00
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright theorized that design was like a living organism, in that all parts were equally important. Therefor wright called for windows, lamps, rugs, buildings and vistas to receive equal design attention in his architectural commissions. Adapted from a casement window from Wright's Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, this design is a stylized, natural form that brings in the outdoors while providing additional privacy to those inside.

Waterlilies T-shirt Frank Lloyd Wright Collection W21 back design with small heart print t-shirt white 9" x 9" XL $30.00 XX $34.00
Other than for his buildings, FLW is best known for his art glass designs and furniture. His philosophy of connecting the natural world and architecture is brought literally to light in his windows. This design from an early Wright drawing, with it's graceful geometric pattern of flowers and lily pads floating on a tranquil pond, was never actually realized in glass.
